Shawn Johnson Takes the Next Step

Shawn Johnson, the highly decorated Junior-level gymnast is taking the next step in her competitive career. On Saturday, Johnson, age 15, will compete in her first Senior-level international competition.

Marlen Garcia has written a feature in today’s USA TODAY on Johnson’s big move.

‘”She shows some real special qualities,” says Martha Karolyi, the U.S. national women’s team coordinator. “She has the difficulty of the skills, probably the highest difficulty levels we have in the country.”

Johnson’s stock soared when she won the junior all-around in the VISA championships with a higher score than the senior champ, an achievement that gave her only a small measure of self-assurance despite its enormity.’
