Vandenberg Takes it Day by Day
Kim Vandenberg knows that success in her sport is often defined by a fraction of a second. So, a year in the life of a swimmer might seem like an eternity.
Although the past 12 months measure less than seven percent of Vandenberg’s 15 years as a competitive athlete in the pool, they can easily be described as the most important 365 days of her career.
Vandenberg, 23, has developed from a UCLA All-American into a World Championship silver medalist. She has gone from hometown hero in Moraga to sharing the same zip code as celebrities in Brentwood. And she’s expanded her international resume from an appearance in Turkey in 2005 to competing in Canada, Australia and all over Europe.
“Swimming has allowed me to travel all over the world, which is what I wanted to do,” Vandenberg said. “It’s been challenging and it’s kept me busy, but I feel like I do my best when I’m the busiest.”
