Shawn Johnson was featured today in story penned by Alan Abrahamson of

Abrahamson writes of Johnson:

There is pressure, and then there is grace under pressure, a performance that not only turns an athlete into a champion but stamps a memory for all time, one to cherish as the years go by, to tell time and again with sweetness and fondness at just the thought of it.

There was Nadia Comaneci in 1976, and her first-ever Olympic perfect 10s, on the uneven bars and the balance beam.

In 1984, there was the spunky Mary Lou Retton in that red, white and blue leotard, the first American to win the Olympic all-around gold medal.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics could well be Shawn Johnson’s Games, the Olympics of power, speed and flair.

America doesn’t know Johnson just yet. But gymnastics insiders do.
