Hamms Make Event Finals at Visa Championships
Welcome back to gymnastics, Paul and Morgan Hamm.
After a three-year layoff following the Athens Games, the twins from Waukesha, Wis., came flying back to the sport with a vengeance Wednesday night at the Visa Championships at the HP Pavilion, showing glimpses of the impeccable form that made them two of the best athletes to ever compete for the U.S.
Paul nailed his first event, the floor exercise, finishing first with a score of 15.7. He faltered midway through his second, the pommel horse, finishing tied for 15th.
Morgan, meanwhile, looked strong and steady on both floor and pommel horse, but struggled with endurance at the end of each. He missed the landing on his final tumbling pass on floor to finish eighth and came undone on his dismount on pommel horse, tying for 18th.
Both Hamms qualified for Friday’s event finals. Morgan may opt out of floor, though, after tweaking his left ankle on a botched landing.
