Shawn Johnson to be Named “World News’” Person of the Week
Shawn Johnson has been selected as “World News’” “Person of the Week” and will be profiled on the broadcast on Friday, September 14.
At just 15, gymnast Shawn Johnsonhas been dubbed “The One to Watch” at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. This past weekend in Stuttgart, Germany, the Iowa teenager won three gold medals at the World Championships, including the all-around title.
This success comes as no surprise to those who know her well. As a baby, Shaun’s mother recalls putting her in her crib only to have her pop up in the living room. “How did she get out?” her parents would ask each other. They tried to channel all of her energy into dance lessons, but that wasn’t taxing enough, so they turned to gymnastics, which Shawn adored.
Shaun was soon discovered by a talented Chinese coach – and former Olympic bronze medalist – who happened to have settled in West Des Moines, Iowa and opened a gymnastics studio. Liang Chow saw the little girl’s potential early on and has nurtured it to the top of the field – if they return together to Beijing, life and their joint Olympic dreams will have come full circle.
Every Friday, “World News” features a “Person of the Week,” someone who – for better or worse – has made a difference to the world or the country or a community. The series was part of the broadcast from 1986 until 1998 and was reintroduced in 2003. Viewers can submit their suggestions for “Person of the Week” via ABCNEWS.com. Jon Banner is the executive producer of “World News with Charles Gibson.”
