Boswell Introduces Resolution Congratulating Shawn Johnson
Congressman Leonard Boswell introduced a House Resolution today, which congratulates 15 year-old Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines on her victory in becoming the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Champion in woman’s gymnastics. The competitions were held earlier this month in Stuttgart, Germany. The resolution will be referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
“Shawn’s dedication to her sport is inspiring and should be recognized,” said Boswell. “In the 40 years that the World Gymnastics Championship has been competed, few American women have obtained the Championship. Shawn won three gold medals and the Championship and joins Shannon Miller, Chellsie Memmel and Kim Zmeskal, in being the only American women to have won this global recognition.”
All members of the Iowa delegation–Representatives Bruce Braley, Steve King, Tom Latham and Dave Loebsack–are original cosponsors of the resolution, along with and Lois Capps (D-CA) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Co-Chairwomen of the Congressional Women’s Caucus, and Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD).
“I hope this resolution will be scheduled for a vote soon, so that the House of Representatives can recognize Shawn for her great accomplishments.”
