Johnson on Whirlwind Tour
To say that the last month has been a whirlwind for newly crowned World Champ Shawn Johnson would be an understatement. Making history as only the fourth American woman to win an all-around title at the World Championships – Kim Zmeskal, Shannon Miller and Chellsie Memmel also own the distinction – Johnson has been a young lady in demand.
“Yes, it’s been crazy and hectic, but it’s also been fun and feels like a reward for all of the hard work,” Johnson tells Inside Gymnastics of the past month’s adventures.
Soon after her victory, Johnson was dubbed “The One to Watch at the 2008 Olympics” and spotlighted as “Person of the Week” on ABC’s World News Tonight with Charles Gibson. She was also named as the spokesperson for the “Pink with a Twist” initiative for the next year, a program which raises awareness for women’s cancer initiatives. At the “Frosted Pink” event this year (televised on ABC), she was a presenter, and got to meet the likes of Sharon Osborne and her favorite music group of all time, country sensation Rascal Flatts.
“That was definitely one of the highlights for me,” Johnson says. “I couldn’t believe I got to meet them. I still can’t believe it! They were great and a lot of fun. They wanted me to teach them some gymnastics! It’s crazy. I mean, they are my favorite music group and it was just a really exciting moment.”
