The Fit List with Joel Harper
Welcome back to The Fit List, where we ask leading health industry experts and professional personal trainers what they do to stay in shape. We recently talked to Joel Harper, Promax Fitness Ambassador and Dr. Oz’s trainer. Here’s what he had to say about his healthy routine.
You have only ten minutes to exercise today, what do you do?
I run up the stairs of the 60-story building where I live – twice.
If you could only recommend one fitness move what would it be?
Towel Runs. It works multiple body parts at the same time – your arms, abs and legs. All you need is a towel and a smooth slick surface. I use my wood floors. Come into upper push-up position and put your feet on the edge of the width of a towel and bring your feet together (now the towel is scrunched between your feet). While in upper push up position, with your elbows slightly soft, bring your right knee up towards your chest and back, then your left. Run for 100x. Keep your abs active the entire time.
What time of day do you exercise?
It varies depending on my schedule.
Who’s your fitness idol and why?
Jack LaLanne. He was a forward thinker and didn’t let age impact his performance. He always tried to maximize his potential until the day he died.
What do you tell yourself when you don’t feel like working out? I don’t tell myself anything. I am a visual person. I close my eyes and visualize exactly what my goals are for 10 minutes. That raves me up and allows me to have laser focus.
My fitness mantra is: If you take care of your body, your body will take care of you.
Cardio or weights? Both, they are not mutually exclusive.
Fave piece of fitness equipment: My bicycle. It serves a purpose by taking me wherever I want to go.
My fave healthy snack is: Promax LS PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE bar. It supplies my body with the protein it needs, containing a whopping 18 grams. It’s also low on sugar, with only 9 grams, but it still satisfies my sweet cravings. I can carry it in my backpack 24/7.
Biggest indulgence: Watching Homeland and Game of Thrones.
How often do you exercise? As often as I brush my teeth – multiple times a day. I like short, efficient and effective workouts.
Biggest fitness/health accomplishment? The Nautica South Beach and Malibu Triathlon – and getting my friends to join!
My definition of “health” is: Feeling well rested after 7 hours of sleep, having a full fridge, and being energized and tension free 24/7.
I feel passionate about health and fitness because: I love helping people get their dream bodies and in the best shape of their lives, without any tension.
