Occupation: Nutritionist, Author & Wellness Activist and Entrepreneur
1. What are three words that best describe you?
Passionate, loving, authentic.
2. Tell us why you’re awesome in two sentences or less.
I’ve always done things on my terms. Backpacking around the world for three years led to the basis of my whole Beauty Detox philosophy, and everything from writing the books to working with clients, and creating amazing products, have all come from my heart and authenticity. My greatest passion is helping others be free and happy, sharing what I’ve learned on my own journey.
3. What are your three biggest indulgences?
Massages, coconut ice cream and dark chocolate!
4. What’s currently your favorite…
Restaurant: Plant Food & Wine (for the beautiful garden and their vegan cheese platter!)
Food: Avocado & sprout wraps, Glowing Green Smoothies – both daily staples for me I can’t miss!
Cocktail: I’m not a drinker these days, but I like some red wine from time to time.
Shopping destination/store: Neiman Marcus – I love me a high end department store with a mix of brands I love!
Fashion item: My Gianvito Rossi flats. Despite my closet full of heels, I’m all about stylish flats now since becoming a mom!
Place to hang out: Venice Beach. It’s a 7 minute walk from our house, and I’m there a few times a week walking the baby, and earthing!
City: I used to live in NY, and love to visit…but I love the outdoor lifestyle in LA. Internationally I love a million cities, including Bangkok, Ulan Batuur, Kigali, Marrakesh, Istanbul, La Paz…
Travel item: My Manduka yoga mat. Always in my suitcase for hotel practice!
Beauty product: Vapour foundation, cream blush and lipstick. It’s a great performance yet non-toxic brand.
Skincare product: I love the Antioxidant Boost from Sally B Skin Yummies.
Hostess gift: Cacao truffles from Glow Bio. It wins over pretty much everyone!
Home décor item: I’m all about colorful pillows to increase the comfy-ness of every couch!
Book: The Language of Flowers, Letting Go, Autobiography of a Yogi
Magazine: Ooh, I can’t pick one as I contribute to a lot of them.
5. What’s the ONE thing you absolutely can’t live without?
Well it’s not so much a “thing” as a practice, but I can’t live without my meditation practice. Otherwise I get stressed out and tend to think things that are not important are…basically life becomes much more of a struggle without it versus the simply happy joyful experience that it can be.
6. What is your biggest pet peeve?
When people make excuses or are not responsible for themselves. If you forgot or screwed up, just own up! And we are all creators who can forge forward and create the lives we want with dedication and passion.
7. If you could have dinner with anyone (living or not) who would it be, and WHY?
The great yoga guru, Paramahansa Yogananda. I think being in the vibrational presence of an actual master who has achieved self-realization would forever change you. I’ve read all of Yogananda’s books and practice his Kriya meditation from the Self Realization Fellowship.
8. What does it mean to you to have a strong, engaging brand and how has having one helped you?
It’s a great honor to be part of and lead the amazing Beauty Detox community. We are all on the journey together and it keeps getting deeper and deeper! In the beginning, the focus was mostly on nutrition and food, and that is still a big part of it. But in my third book, and fourth book, Radical Beauty (which I co-authored with Deepak Chopra), I started delving into topics such as meditation, the psychological aspect of food cravings, yoga, overall mental, emotional and spiritual health, and overcoming shame and guilt to feel truly empowered and own our unique expression of beauty. It has blossomed and grown and I’m very grateful to be part of it all, and to be able to serve such an amazing community.
9. What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?
Be your own unique self, because that is when you are your most powerful and truly beautiful. Go with the curly hair and the partly Asian eyes and nerdy side and know that you are more than enough, more than okay just as you are! You are special for who you ARE now what you DO. Don’t waste energy trying to be like everyone else. Be you, and shine!!
10. What is one piece of advice you would give to women today about staying true to themselves and succeeding on their own terms?
There is only one of you in the world, so when you tap into your unique voice, your unique expression and way of looking at things and going about things, and own it, along with the qualities of unassailable passion, commitment and focus…doors will open and the universe will move to support you and your dreams.
3. Antioxidant Skin Boost
Mix a scoop of Boost with your night cream or serum and let its super antioxidant powers brighten your complexion and fight free radicals to help prevent the signs of aging.
4. Autobiography of a Yogi
Paramahansa Yogananda sensitively interprets not only his own spiritual evolution but also his relationship with elements of the West’s spiritual tradition.
10. The Language of Flowers
The story of an unforgettable woman whose gift for flowers helps her change the lives of others even as she struggles to overcome her own troubled past.
