O`Donnell repeats while Zeiger reclaims women’s crown at Boulder Peak Triathlon
Two familiar faces earned victories at the Boulder Peak Triathlon on Sunday morning at the Boulder Reservoir.
Tim O`Donnell won the men`s race for the second year in a row with a time of 1 hour and 54 minutes. Ken Reed came in second (1:57:24) and Matt Reed finished in third place (1:58:12), a day after winning the Life Time Fitness Triathlon in Minnesota.
Joanna Zeiger won the women`s race for the first time since 2007 with a time of 2:10:03. Second place went to Angela Naeth (2:12:28), who was the champion of the Peak Triathlon in 2008, and Lisa Marangon (2:14:04) was third.
O`Donnell, who lives in Boulder, had the top overall times in the cycling (59:55) and running portions (32:44) of the race. That top speed in the 42K bike ride was a perfect execution of his strategy entering the race.
“My plan was to come out right up front and then that first five miles on the bike, I put all my power into that and I just thought, out of sight, out of mind,” O`Donnell said. “I really feel I was able to lock the race up right there.”
Overall, O`Donnell knocked 32 seconds off his winning time from 2009.Zeiger, also of Boulder, finished in first place a year after not even finishing the Boulder Peak Triathlon at all. She was coming off of a very serious injury as she crashed last year and has had problems with her ribs and breathing.
“My whole plan for the day was to keep it under that point in when the breathing becomes difficult,” Zeiger said. “I started the run and felt really good and then I just started falling off a little bit at the end.”
This win was certainly special for Zeiger.
“It feels really good to have the home crowd,” she said. “I love this race and I`m really psyched to have won it.”
There were more than 1,800 participants in total with more than $35,000 awarded to the professional triathletes. The winners were each awarded $6,000 and O`Donnell was awarded an extra $1,000 for being the first competitor to cross the finish line as he wiped away the 15:12 lead the women were given at the beginning of the race. The race consisted of a 1.5K swim, a 42K bike ride and a 10K run.
