The 2nd Annual #SupportingOurSector Campaign Announces $70,000 In Prizes To Benefit Local Los Angeles Charities
Starfish Impact, a philanthropic consulting firm, today announced the kick-off of its 2nd annual social media contest, #SupportingOurSector, to begin on September 12, 2017. #SupportingOurSector will award donation packages of cash and in-kind services worth $70,000 from Los Angeles business partners to multiple non-profit organizations that are both nominated and voted on by the public.
For a non-profit to be considered for the grand prize, community members must fill out a simple form on why they believe their favorite charity deserves to win. The top five nominated charities will move on to the voting round and the public can vote on their favorite. The winner of #SupportingOurSector will be announced on November 15th, National Philanthropy Day, at the campaign celebration and awards event.
The #SupportingOurSector schedule is as follows:
ï‚· Nomination Period: 9/12 – 10/6
ï‚· Voting Period: 10/23 – 11/3
ï‚· Winner Announced: 11/15
“We are excited for the return of the #SupportingOurSector contest and to bring together the community and local businesses to help deserving Los Angeles non-profits,” said Marta Ferro, creator of #SupportingOurSector and President & Founder of Starfish Impact. “During the campaign’s first year in 2016 we saw a lot of support and engagement from the community, which shows how passionate they are in helping the non-profit sector. We look forward to even more engagement this year!”
#SupportingOurSector creates an opportunity for all types of businesses, and especially small to mid-sized companies, to make a stronger impact on the community with their donations and expertise by using a giving circle model, where all involved partners are able to maximize their donations by putting them into a pooled fund that will be given to the winning charities. (List of business partners below) The campaign also increases exposure for all of the non-profits involved by including each charity on communication materials and by the social sharing of fans and community members to encourage voting. In fact, participating non-profits in 2016’s campaign saw significant increases in end of year donations and were highlighted in a blog on the Starfish website.
Last year, #SupportingOurSector awarded a package worth over $40,000 to Kitchens for Good, a non-profit dedicated to breaking the cycle of food waste, poverty and hunger through innovative programs in workforce training, healthy food production and social enterprise. The four runner-up winners included WriteGirl, C5LA, Elizabeth House and Kurmalliance, and each received a prize package, totaling up to an additional $7,000 invested in the nonprofit finalists.
