International Women’s Day: Women Who We Look Up To

Since opening its doors, Stanton & Company has continued a passion for promoting and building positive female role models and messaging for women. For International Women’s Day on March 8, the S&Co team reflects on the strong women that have made them who they are today, and who they look up to in the public sphere. Especially during this empowering time of women speaking up and demanding change, it’s important to reflect on women who persevered to make today possible.

I’m inspired by J.K. Rowling because she went from being unemployed to becoming a multi-millionaire in five years. She brought the magic of reading to a new generation and became one of my cult classic favorite book series that never gets old.

A woman I have always looked up to is Chelsea Handler. She may not initially seem like someone who is “inspiration-worthy” but just hear me out. In the early days of her career, as a comedian and late night show host on E!, I found comfort and reassurance in her IDGAF attitude to anyone who may disapprove of her lifestyle. She was a strong woman who talked openly about things that weren’t “lady-like,” and told haters to move along. I found her confidence infectious. As she moved onto her multiple Netflix specials, the theme of each was to discover and learn about things in a way that entertains the audience. I think for her to admit her own shortcomings and demonstrate her eagerness to continually learn is also aspirational. Now, she has left Netflix with the goal of supporting females running for local, state and federal government positions. I have been a fan of Chelsea’s for a really long time and to watch her growth and transformation into now being an activist in politics is something I really admire and I’m proud to name her as my inspiration for International Women’s Day.

My mom has and always will be my biggest role model! She is successful, smart, hardworking and on top of all that, an amazing mother! She encourages me daily, has the best advice and has always pushed me to go the “extra mile.” I’m also lucky to work with an office full of inspiring women – I look up to all of them so much!

A woman I look up to is US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley. I admire her fierce speaking style and strength to maintain strong diplomatic relations abroad. She’s committed to finding solutions to end the Syrian war and isn’t scared to call out actors who are prolonging the suffering. It’s rare for women to be appointed this role, and in countries where women don’t have as many rights, I believe Nikki represents women’s strength at the international level.

During this past Winter Olympics, I was amazed by all of the strong women who represented our country. Did you know women are responsible for 12 of the 21 medals that the USA brought back from PyeongChang? I’m proud to be a woman in this era and have excellent female role models to look up to.
