S&Co founder and CEO Amy Stanton wrote another piece on Medium’s The Ascent based on the themes from her upcoming book, The Feminine Revolution (available November 6th). There are a lot of feminine characteristics that women have been told to suppress in order to get ahead, especially in the workplace. However, Amy posits that qualities such as sensitivity, being controlling, and agreeableness may actually give women an advantage in business. Amy explains, “Research is discovering that there’s a real need for feminine qualities in the modern workplace. Traditionally, it was believed that the most effective business leaders were ones who possessed strongly masculine qualities: assertiveness, decisiveness, a bias toward action. However, a recent Harvard Business Review study revealed that typically feminine traits are overwhelmingly desired over masculine ones in an ideal leader. The global survey, which included 64,000 participants and classified 125 different human characteristics, found that, of the 10 most important traits for an ideal modern leader to possess, eight were deemed “feminine.” Of course, embracing your feminine qualities doesn’t mean waking up one day and saying ‘Today, I’m unleashing my femininity.’ It’s much more nuanced than that.”
