SpaRitual Featured In Ultimate Cruelty Free Makeup Brands List
Welcome to my Ultimate Cruelty Free Makeup Brands List. I update this list as often as I can and list the date it was last updated to make it easy for you to see.
I originally started blogging because I couldn’t find a match in MAC foundation (all shades were too dark) so I turned to indie cosmetics. I couldn’t find very many indie foundation reviews, so I shared mine. In 2012 I changed the focus of my blog to cruelty free beauty. From 1999 until March 2012 I was a MAC fan, but when I found out they were selling in China and testing on animals I wrote a letter to MAC and went cruelty free. See my video on the easy way to go cruelty free!
I choose to support cruelty free brands who are not selling in China, even if they have a parent company that is not cruelty free. I believe that supporting animal-friendly companies goes a long way toward the eventual elimination of animal testing. If a brand is not cruelty free but decides to go cruelty free, I will support them! I want brands to stop testing on animals.
I realize that all ingredients were tested on animals at one time. Even water. But I do not want to support a brand that is currently testing on animals. I don’t believe the bullshit that ‘nothing is truly cruelty free because everything was tested at one point.’
You can sell in Hong Kong (but nowhere else in China) and still be cruelty free because Hong Kong is exempt from animal testing. You can also make products in China, but not sell in China, and be cruelty free.
How I determine if a brand is cruelty free
- Email the brand directly.
- Talk with my friends Jen of My Beauty Bunny and Tashina of Logical Harmony about brands.
- Check Paula’s Choice, Leaping Bunny, PETA, and NAVS lists.
- Make sure the brand isn’t selling on Sephora China or Skin Store China

In Short:
- I support cruelty free brands who are not currently testing on animals and who are not currently selling in countries that require mandatory animal testing.
- I support brands who are cruelty free even if their parent company is not cruelty free.
- I prefer it when brands get Leaping Bunny Certification. I email and ask brands to do this. You should ask them too! Learn how easy it is for a brand to become Leaping Bunny Certified!
- If you don’t consider a brand to be cruelty free, even if I do, don’t buy from them. You can always email a brand directly, too.
- Voting with your money matters!
