New Research Links Mental Illness and Inflammation. Here’s What You Need to Know

Most of us know that inflammation is harmful to the body and can lead to serious illnesses. However, recent research suggests that inflammation may negatively affect one’s mental health. S&Co client Dr. Robert Zembroski, author of Rebuild, talks about how inflammation may affect mental health and ways to prevent/minimize inflammation. Dr. Zembroski says, “I don’t think we can blame any one mood disorder or mental illness on any one factor. I think people – not only people, but doctors and healthcare providers – really have to focus on underlying roots and reasons why people may have inflammation and autoimmune issues.” Some of his tips include avoiding inflammatory foods such as dairy and gluten, implementing high-intensity training, and getting quality sleep.
