S&Co founder and CEO Amy Stanton wrote an article for Medium about the important lessons she learned when she cried during a performance review. The coauthor of The Feminine Revolution reflects back on when she did not receive a raise she expected and felt she deserved. Amy felt undervalued and as a result, burst into tears at the restaurant in front of her boss and left the review embarrassed of her emotional display. However, after years of exploring and critically examining femininity, Amy has begun to embrace her emotionality in the workplace and thinks you should too. She writes, “I know in my own case that once I came to terms with the fact that I actually think crying is just fine – honestly, I’m a real advocate for crying – the less I cried. If we allow ourselves to simply have our emotional experience, once it’s over we can just move on and get to the next thing. What’s more, accepting our emotional expressions for what they are means we can allow them to bring us closer to the people we work with.”
