From the Founder, April 2019
Happy April!
The spring is off to an exciting start and as is often the case, we’re all feeling a burst of fresh energy and momentum. Work is busy as usual – new team members, new clients – so many wonderful things happening and I’m grateful. Sometimes my immediate response to change isn’t a positive one – that said, it’s proven time and time again that change brings progress and growth. And the process can be uncomfortable.
I’ve always used my workouts to manage my stress. My morning beach runs, yoga classes, training sessions with Junior have always been an important part of my weekly routine and important “me time” that I can count on for a release and reset. A little over two years ago, I started dancing at LA Dancefit. Since then, I’ve been pretty religious about it – I am committed to my various weekly classes and am continually working hard and pushing myself to progress. One of the best parts of choreography classes is that I literally can’t think about anything else while I’m learning a routine. I am completely focused and in the moment for that hour which means my mind can take a break from thinking about work and anything else that might be on my mind. It’s an enormous gift.
Last weekend, I participated in LA Dancefit’s “dance team” performance. This is the third of these performances I’ve done and honestly, if you had asked me two years ago if I would EVER be dancing in a “dance team” performance, my answer would have been an absolute no. How quickly things change 🙂
I decided to do it last year for the first time – one of my fantastic teachers, Kiari Kirk (Kiki), took me through a six-week journey, learning and rehearsing the cr*p out of a lyrical/modern routine. I truly thought I was going to die when I got on stage (and for the weeks leading up to it). I did it again with him in the spring. And our third performance last Sunday was another lyrical routine to “Purple Rain” (my favorite one so far). Kiki outdid himself with this routine.
There are so many aspects of the experience which I love. It’s an amazing group of women from all over, coming together each with our own reasons for participating, making a commitment and working hard to achieve something great. The nicest, most supportive group of women. It’s challenging at moments and there are ups and downs through the process: moments where I inevitably think to myself: Can I do this? Why am I doing this? At the end, we come together for a celebratory day, both performing and supporting all of the other dancers performing their respective routines. So much fun, so much joy!
It’s 100 percent worth it. Again, I would never have imagined myself doing it but I’m so glad I did. It’s a great reminder of the power of pushing ourselves outside of the comfort zone – we never know what might be on the other side!
Wishing you a wonderful month.
xx,
Amy
