Haskins Wins Nautica South Beach Triathlon
It was a beautiful day for a race in Miami, and several Olympians and Olympic hopefuls looking for fierce competition at the international distance found it at the fifth annual Nautica South Beach Triathlon. The event has raised more than $1 million for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
The water was a warm 75 degrees for the 1.5K ocean swim, making it wetsuit legal. Pros raced the fast, flat out-and-back bike and run courses in humid weather in the low 70s, while celebrities including James Marsden and NBC news anchor Natalie Morales lined up for the Classic distance start to swim a half mile, bike 19 miles, and run four miles.
On the men’s side, 2008 Olympian Javier Gomez dominated the course, with 2012 Olympic hopeful Ben Collins coming in second and two-time Olympic medalist Bevan Docherty rounding out the podium. On the women’s side, 2008 Olympian Sarah Haskins ran it in for the win almost three minutes ahead of second place finisher Annabel Luxford. Alicia Kaye rounded out the podium in third.
