Inaugural Ironman 70.3 event in Ontario a huge success

Alexander and Zeiger Win at Subaru Ironman 70.3 MuskokaIt was an international field of athletes at the starting line of the inaugural Subaru Ironman 70.3 Muskoka in Huntsville. More than 1400 athletes undertook the 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike followed by a 21.1 km run through the picturesque Muskoka region.

The men’s race was won by Craig Alexander of Australia in a time of 4:10:31. Alexander is a world champion at the 70.3 distance in 2006 and is acknowledged as one of the best at this distance. Coming off of the bike just nine seconds down, he pushed hard on the run to finish more than four minutes ahead of second place. He was followed by fellow Australian, Richie Cunningham and Daniel Bretscher of the USA. Filling in the top five were Simon Lessing, representing Great Britain, who won the 1992 Triathlon World Championships held in Muskoka and Janda Ricci-Munn of the USA.

Joanna Zeiger of Boulder, CO led the women’s race from the start, she came out of the water with a lead of just a minutes. Building on that with a strong bike ride, Zieger finished just over five minutes ahead of second place, Rebeccah Wassner of the USA and first year pro Angela Naeth of Penticton, BC
