Jeter named USATF Athlete of the Week
2012 Olympic silver medalist Carmelita Jeter (Gardena, Calif.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after picking up two Diamond League wins last week in the 100 meters.
Jeter’s first win came on August 23 in Lausanne where she and 2012 Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were clocked in identical times of 10.86 but Jeter was determined the winner.
Four days later the rivals faced one another again in Birmingham, and Jeter clearly took the win as she set a meet record of 10.81. Fraser-Pryce finished second in 10.90.
Jeter currently sits in second place behind Fraser-Pryce in the Diamond League standings by two points. The overall series winner will be determined in Zurich on August 30 when the pair face-off again in the 100m.
Now in its 11th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
