American Heather McPhie wins World Cup moguls
U.S. skier Heather McPhie opened the moguls season with a victory at a World Cup in Ruka, Finland, on Saturday.
In the men’s competition, Jeremy Cota took third. Mikael Kingsbury of Canada, who was the overall champion last season, won the event. Cota, who was eliminated by Alexander Bilodeau, threw back-full and back-X.
McPhie, of Bozeman, Mont., won with a back-X and signature D-spin. U.S. teammate Hannah Kearney, the 2010 Olympic champion, did not compete as she recovers from a crash in October.
Five of six U.S. women advanced to the finals.
McPhie, a former gymnast, had four World Cup podiums last season and won her first U.S. title.
