Hilary Knight is a two time Olympic Silver medalist, six time World Champion and arguably the best female hockey player in the world. In 2014, she made history as the first female skater (non-goalie) to practice with an NHL team after she took the ice with the Anaheim Ducks.

Hilary grew up in a skiing household with parents who had never ice skated. She was on skis at the age of two, but when she turned five her family moved to Chicago and she began playing ice hockey. Her three younger brothers all played hockey, and helped her hone her skills growing up.

When it came time to choose a college Hilary had her pick from the many colleges recruiting her. After visiting Wisconsin she knew she had found her home. Hilary led the American team to the 2009 IIHF Worlds and was named one of the top three players at just 19 years old. The following year, at the Vancouver Olympics, Hilary made her debut as the youngest member of the US Hockey Team. After winning the Silver, she returned to Wisconsin to complete her collegiate career with the Badgers.

Hilary was a three time All-American and appeared in the NCAA Final all four of her years as a Badger, leading Wisconsin to the title her sophomore and junior season. In her junior season Hilary also set the all-time record for goals scored, one of many highlights that led to her being named co-MVP for the Badgers during their victorious championship game. She left the NCAA after her senior season and left women’s college ice hockey with an amazing legacy.

In 2012, Hilary was drafted first overall in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. She played for the Boston Blades her rookie season, and she was named MVP of the league as she carried the Blades’ scoring record that season.

In 2013, Hilary played on Team USA, winning Gold at the 2013 IIHF World Championship and in 2014, she helped lead Team USA to a Silver Medal at the Sochi Olympics. In Sochi she was named to the media all-star team in addition to being named the Bob Allen’s Player of the Year for Women’s Hockey.

That same year, in 2014, through the ESPN’s “The Body Issue,” Hilary shattered the body image that muscular isn’t feminine, and spoke out on behalf of females all over the world. She also spoke at the espnW Women + Sports Summit to encourage the rethinking of stereotypes of women’s sports. In March of 2015, Hilary was the face of the Always’ #LikeAGirl campaign, helping to empower girls and women everywhere to believe in themselves.

At the IIHF Women’s Worlds in 2015, Hilary was named the MVP and was named the Best Forward as she led Team USA to Gold. Switching to the National Women’s Hockey League later that year, Hilary led her team the Isobel Cup title, and was named the NWHL League’s Leading Scorer.

At the 2016 World Championship, Team USA and Hilary went undefeated on the road to their third straight World Championship gold and claimed their seven IIHF Women’s World Championship title. For the third straight year, Hilary was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and received the Directorate Award for Best Forward.

Hilary looks forward to the 2018 Winter Olympics, and is always looking for ways to change the world of hockey as women know it. Her impact on women’s sports has created an opportunity for women and girls everywhere to step up and compete.
