US Beats Canada 5-1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Alex Carpenter, Brianna Decker, Hilary Knight, Meghan Duggan and Megan Bozek scored to help the United States beat Canada 5-1 in a women’s exhibition hockey game Thursday night, hours after Canadian coach Dan Church resigned.

Jessie Vetter made 15 saves, allowing only Tara Watchorn’s goal.

Church resigned less than two months before the start of the Sochi Games, saying he felt others lacked confidence in his ability to lead the country to a fourth consecutive gold medal.

Assistant coaches Lisa Haley and Danielle Goyette served as co-coaches.

The teams will also play this month in Grand Forks, N.D.; St. Paul, Minn.; and Toronto.
