Maddy Schaffrick

Maddy Schaffrick is one of the most compelling comeback stories in snowboarding today, a former teenage phenom who walked away from the sport for nearly a decade before returning stronger, more grounded, and more determined than ever.

A native of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Maddy turned pro at just 14 years old. Early results — including Grand Prix podiums and a breakout X Games appearance where she earned Best Trick and Most Progressive Rider, positioned her as one of the brightest young halfpipe talents in the country.

But by age 20, the pressures of elite sport, extensive travel, and the invisible weight of burnout forced her into early retirement. She stepped away completely, working outside athletics before returning to her roots as a volunteer coach at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. What began as a part-time role quickly became transformative. Coaching young riders rekindled her love for snowboarding and helped her heal, mentally, emotionally, and physically.

She went on to become head coach and snowboard program director, eventually joining the U.S. Snowboard Halfpipe Team as an assistant coach. Through supporting others, she rediscovered the joy and purpose she’d lost as a teenager.

In 2022, Maddy made the bold decision to return to competition with a renewed mindset and a dream she’d carried since childhood: making the Olympic team. Her comeback reached a milestone in 2024 when, in her first World Cup appearance after nine years, she earned her first World Cup podium at Secret Garden, China.

Now competing for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Pro Halfpipe Team, Maddy is chasing qualification for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games, not out of expectation, but out of love for the sport that shaped her life. She is also an advocate for athlete mental health, sharing her story to help normalize conversations around burnout and resilience.

Maddy Schaffrick’s journey is proof that it’s never too late to return to what you love,  and to rewrite your story on your own terms.
