Choosing Not To Have Kids

‘Today’ correspondent Sarah Brokaw reports on American women who decide to remain childless. “As a little girl, Lilit Marcus loved playing with dolls, she was a star babysitter in the neighborhood, but when it came to wanting children one day Lilit had very different ideas,” Brokaw explains. “I kind of knew in the back of my head, it wasn’t something I wanted,” Marcus says in an interview. According to a Pew study, one in five American women end their childbearing years without giving birth. According to psychiatrist Janet Taylor, society expects motherhood is one of the roles women should aspire to. “The bottom line is: It is a choice. And for women, we don’t have to feel like motherhood is a rite of passage that we necessarily have to have,” Taylor explains.
